Biography

"I am very grateful and happy to have Pandit Ashok Pathak as my Guruji" says Bert Cornelis. Bert Cornelis is gandabandh shishya of Pandit Ashok Pathak. He is a Sitar player. Bert Cornelis is fortunate to perform with his guru many times. He is performing in program 'Al Palna'. It is a musical fusion program of Sitar and singer Ghalia Benali. He also does Jugalbandi program i.e. 'Sitar and Pakhawaj Jugalbandi with Pandit Udhav Apegaonkar Shinde (pakhawaj), who is the son of the legendary Padmashree Bapu Apegaonkar. Bert Cornelis presents 'Sadhana' program. Sadhana is a new project in progress. Under the working title ‘the Alchemy of the Heart’, Bert invited artists with whom he had separately great artistic and personal contacts to create something new together: Anne-Cecile Chane-Tune: dance, Simon Lenski: cello, electronics, Anwar Abudragh: vocals, djose, oud, Dadmehr: tombak, daf, Partha Sarathi Mukherjee: tabla, Alain Collet: lights.

Bert Cornelispresents Sitar and Pakhawaj Jugalbandi

Pandit Udhav Apegaonkar Shinde (pakhawaj) is the son of the legendary Padmashree Bapu Apegaonkar. He is regarded as one of the very few artists in the whole world to have mastered this ancient art. He is renowned for his solo work as well as accompanying the greatest drupad masters. Last winter, Pandit Shinde invited sitar player Bert Cornelis to Maharastra in India for a series of concerts. In a concert attended by 15 thousand spectators and relayed by Mumbai media and television, they performed in a unique and highly appreciated combination – jugalbandi, a sitar-pakhawaj duo. Bert Cornelis presents Al Palna musical fusion of Sitar and singing.

Al Palna is the musical fusion of Bert Cornelis and the singer Ghalia Benali. The magical voice of Ghalia and Bert's Sitar playing merge wonderfully well together, described as a 'Heavenly Duet', a unique combination of 'Indian and Arabic Moods'. It gives Bert the opportunity to use all the techniques of Sitar and Raga Music. As quoted by the Press: ‘Al Palna is the Arab-Hindu Cradle’. The music travels from deep meditative spheres to ecstatic heights. Indian and Arabic musical approaches, intrinsically woven together.
