Shree Krishnarao(Mamasaheb) Mujumdar, Kalpana’s father and guru was an ace disciple of Ustad Rajjab Ali Khan of Dewas.Mamasaheb had the rare opportunity of close contact with many stalwart vocalists like Pt. B. R. Deodhar, Smt. Anjanibai Malpekar, Pt. S. N. Ratanjankar etc and absorbed their specialities. |
Kalpana was thus fortunate to receive the mantel of such a rich heritage which she is ably bearing.Gifted with an extremely melodious voice, Kalpana has studiously developed the ‘Taan Ang’ for which her Gharana is famous. Her highly imaginative combinations of ‘Swaras’ are pleasing and appealing to knowledgeable listeners as well as to those not formally initiated in the intricacies of classical music.Kalpana has an equal command over the classical and the light classical styles of music. She renders ‘Khayal’ as well as ‘Thumari’, ‘Tappa’ and ‘Bhajan’with equal authority.
Besides the training Kalpana received from Shri Krishnarao Mujumdar, she has been taking guidance for Khayal and Thumari Gayakifrom Dr. Mrs. Sushila Pohankar, and for Tappa Gayaki and traditional rare compositions from Shri. V. U. Rajurkar, both music scholars of Gwalior Gharana.
Her mastery of the ‘Taan Ang’ is clearly apparent in her rendering of ‘Tappa’ which is a composition consisting of complex & fast taans.
