Amongst the middle generation of top professional musicians, emerges another noteworthy Harmonium and Organ Solo Performer and Accompanist – Pandit Prakash Chitnis. Pandit Prakashjee started his career of learning harmonium from Sangeet Tirth Pandit Vinayakrao Kale of Thane. He acquired in-depth knowledge of Hindustani Classical Music as well proficiency in harmonium from his Guru. His desire for excellence led him to learn from the famous Harmonium and Organ player Pandit Govindrao Patwardhan. Under Pandit Govindrao’s tutelage, Pandit Prakash acquired the finer nuances and skill of presenting the popular 'Gandharva Gayakee’ (Marathi Natyasangeet). And thus, playing natyageets on harmonium and organ became one of his special skills. Pandit Prakash also had the privilege of learning Harmonium from Maestro-Pandit Vishwanath Pendharkar with special focus on Solo performances. With learning from various respected Gurus, Pandit Prakash went ahead to achieve the 'Sangeet Alankar' Degree (Post Graduation) in Harmonium from Akhil Bhartiya Gandharva Mahavidyalay. He is a graduate from Arts faculty. Being an artist who loves in depth study of music, Pandit Prakashjee decided to pursue PhD degree under the guidance of Dr. Vikas Kashalkar. He was awarded the PhD (Sangeetacharya) degree in 2025 by Akhil Bhartiya Gandharva Mahavidyalaya. He is one of the very few artists who have been awarded Doctorate in the area of instrumental music - Harmonium. His doctoral research focused on “The Study of Pandit Govindrao Patwardhan’s Organ and Harmonium Playing Style”. Receiving this honour in the birth centenary year of his revered Guru, Pandit Govindrao Patwardhan, makes this achievement especially meaningful and fulfilling. Panditjee excels in all the three facets of harmonium playing such as accompanying (Saath Sangat), Solo (Ekal Vadan) and Saha Vadan. Pandit Prakash Chitnis has accompanied leading and renowned vocalists of Indian Classical Music, such as Bharatratna Pt. Bhimsen Joshi, Pandit Yashwantbua Joshi, Pandit Prabhakar Karekar, Pandit Firoz Dastur, Pandit Basawaraj Raiguru, Usatad Hafiz Ahmed Khan, Singh Bandhu, Pandit Sharad Jambhekar, Dr. Vikas Kashalkar, Pandit, Dr Vidyadhar Vyas, Sangeetacharya Pandit Arun Kashalkar, Pandit Venkeshkumar, Pandit Aiay Pohankar, Pandit Jayateerth Mevundi, Vidushi Manik Verma, Vidushi Shobha Gurtu , Vidushi Prabha Atre, Vidushi Kankana Banerjee, Vidushi Devaki Pandit, Vidushi Asha Khadilkar, Vidushi Savani Shende and many others, is a feather in his cap. He has provided Harmonium accompaniment to various Audio Cassettes and CDs of Indian Classical Music. While accompanying various artists, he has shown great skill in accompanying various types of Hindustani Music such as Khayal, Thumari, Tappa, Dadra, Gazal, Devotional Songs (Bhajan and Keertan). 'Swara-Mancha' approached him for publishing his Harmonium solo cassette. Only very accomplished harmonium artists get an opportunity to have solo performances. Pandit Prakash got opportunity to have solo recitals of Harmonium on All India Radio & Mumbai Doordarshan. His solo performances in Maharashtra and other states are very well appreciated and have left an unforgettable memory in the minds of the listeners. He happens to be the first solo Harmonium player from Maharashtra to have performed in Kerala in the Hindustani Style, where not only the common music lovers but even the Connoisseurs of Carnatic Music appreciated his performances. He was felicitated by Kerala Govt. by awarding the title Pandit. His reputation reached abroad as well and Shri. Sanieev Jahagirdar (Senior Disciple of Pandit Bhimsen Joshi), and Prakashjee were invited in Abu Dhabi, Dubai & Sharjah. Their programs were highly acclaimed. Prakashjee provided accompaniment to Sanjeevjee. Natya Sangeet is a much-acclaimed tradition of Maharashtra. All the music lovers have special place in their hearts for this style of music. Organ accompaniment plays key role for the Natya Sangeet and Sangeet Natak (Musical Plays). Pandit Prakash mastered this instrument as well and provided able organ accompaniment to very renowned Musical Plays like Sangeet Saubhadra, Sangeet Punyaprabhav, Deomanus etc. His feather touch and unique style of playing leaves deep impact on the minds of the listener. He has been performing solo performances for more than 45 years. At the same time his sahavadan performances along with Violin, Sitar, Shehnai and Veena artistes are equally treasured by the audience.
