Roots
Born and raised in Chalisgaon, Maharashtra, Vivek Sonar was profoundly influenced by his
late father, Shri Ramchandra Sonar, an esteemed vocalist of the ‘Varkari Sampradaya,’ a
traditional pilgrim music community. It was in this rich musical environment that Vivek began
his journey with the flute at a young age.
Vivek sought the guidance of his first guru in Bansuri, Pt. Purushottam Antapurkar, where
he received foundational training until 1996. Under Pt. Antapurkar's mentorship, Vivek
developed essential skills and a deep understanding of the flute, laying the groundwork for
his future musical endeavors.
In 1997, Vivek relocated to Mumbai to further his professional training under the legendary
Pt. Hariprasad Chaurasia. This marked a significant turning point in his artistic development,
as the maestro introduced him to deeper realms of musical exploration and expression,
shaping Vivek into the accomplished flautist he is today.
