Biography

Dr. Pt . Nandkishore Kapote is a renowned artist and is contributing in the field of Kathak Dance for more than 35 years. He is the first one and only male Senior Dance Maestro in Maharashtra.

Nandkishore is also the first and only disciple of Pt. Birju Maharaj in India who received Ph.D (Doctorate) in Kathak Dance under Maharaji's guidance.

In 1983 with the blessings of Bharat Ratna Pt. Bhimsen Joshi, Nandkishore Kapote established The Kathak Institution stepping into the field of Kathak dance training in Pune (Maharashtra).

‘Kathak Samrat – Birju Maharaj’ book written by Dr. Nandkishore Kapote has been recommended by Pune University and Tilak Maharashtra University as a reference book for various dance examinations. One of his famous write-up is also included as important chapter in the book "Tribal dances of India".

Career

In 1983 with the blessings of Bharat Ratna Pt. Bhimsen Joshi, Nandkishore Kapote established The Kathak Institution Nandkishore Cultural Society stepping into the field of Kathak dance training in Pune (Maharashtra). He has trained thousands of students in Maharashtra, India and abroad by doing considerable constructive work in the field of dance. His institution consists of well equipped auditorium of its own that provides a ready platform to the students to enhance and perform their art.

In 1998 Dr. Nandkishore established “Kathak University”. In 2006 Nandkishore has established “Pt. Birju Maharaj Dance and Music Research Centre and Library” consisting thousands of books related to dance and music for the acquaintance of students.

Dr.Nandkishore Kapote is recognized Ph.d. Guide in Kathak Dance at University of Pune he is associated with Pune University Since 25 Year. Many students have pursued their bachelors and masters in Kathak under him. he has also been and active examiner for several Graduate and post Graduate exams.

Awards & Achievements

A scholarly performer, Nandkishore took Kathak to new heights by choreographing Kathak Dance Dramas. He has choreographed several dance dramas (Ballets). “Mahamanav” for the first time in India based on the life of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar, this Ballet was telecasted by Mumbai Doordarhan couple of times as it creates a mesmerising impact on SOUL of viewers by spreading the message given by Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar. He has also choreographed “Mrutyunjay Mahaveer” based on Jain dharma and Lord Mahaveer's life. He also choreographed “Mahakaleshwar Shiva” based on Nava Rasa and he the first in India to create the ballet “Narvar Krishna Saman” based on Balgandharva’s Marathi Natya Sangeet.

Dr. Nandkishore is an ‘A’ Grade artist from Delhi Doordarshan. He is selected for outstanding contribution and work in Kathak dance by Limca Book of Records (1991-1994). He has also received the prestigious “Maharashtra State Cultural Award 2003” by CM of Maharashtra for 35 years of contribution and devotion in Kathak Dance and “Maharashtra State Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Dalit Mitra Award 2010” by CM of Maharashtra. He recently received "Balgandharva Award" 2014 by Pune Municipal Corporation
