Taalmani Shri P.Vetri Boopathy, a post graduate in Commerce and a B-HIGH Graded artist of AIR and Doordarshan, is the son & disciple of Mridangam Maestro & famous Mridangam Guru “Mridanga Chelvam” “Kalaimamani” Shri A Premkumar and mridangam legend guru shri karaikudi mani and hails from a hereditary family of famous musicians from Kumbakonam, Nachiar Kovil (Tamil Nadu).
His paternal grandfather “Mridanga Chelvam” K. P. Singaram Pillai, grandmother Kottuvadhyam Savitri Ammal, Kalaimamani Flute Vidushi T.R.Navneetham are the few names in the field of Carnatic music.
Shri Vetri has started learning this art of Mridangam at the age of 5 under the able guidance of his illustrious father guru “Kalaimamani” Shri A. Premkumar and has the privilege of learning the art from internationally acclaimed Mridangam Maestro Sangeeta Nataka Academi Awardee living legend Guru Shri Karaikkudi Mani.
Shri Vetri is a Staff Percussionist of Music Department, National School of Drama, Ministry of Culture, Govt. of India since 2002. Apart from being a Percussionist in NSD, he has been the music director for theater productions & worked with eminent music directors of theater to say a few “Padmabhushan” K. N. Panicker, “Sangeet Natak Academy Awardee” Shri Bhaskar Chandravarkar, “Sangeet Natak Academy Awardee” Shri. Kajal Ghosh.
He is the only Mridangam player of Delhi, who has got the privilege of conducting “Mridangam workshop” for the young Mridangam students from all over Delhi under Sahitya Kala Parishad in the year 2003.
Apart from regular broadcast from All India Radio and Doordarshan, he has also played many Vadhya Vrinda conducted by AIR and played Jugalbandi concert at “Sangeeth sammelan” organized by Rampur
AIR and played in various prestigious music festivals of Sangeet Natak Academy to say a few, “Sangeeth Pratibha”, “SangeetSangam” and many more.
He, apart from performer of this art, is also actively engaged in the noble cause of passing on the rich tradition of playing Mridangam and other Carnatic percussion instruments by teaching young students of Delhi and abroad and with the blessings of his guru’s, he has done many mridangam Arangetrams of his disciples and continuing to do so. This time he is proud to present and give the first female mridandam player of Delhi.
