The Boston-based saxophonist Phil Scarff is versatile enough to switch among Indian classical ensembles, improvisational jazz combos, the Indo-African fusion collective Natraj and an eclectic duo with pianist Lewis Porter. Ragas on Saxophone is a simple concept that seems obvious—why hasn't it been done more often?—yet, of course, the novelty isn't the point at all. He approaches the music with the utmost discipline and respect.
Phil is a master jazz saxophonist, and leads the acclaimed world-jazz ensembles, Natraj and the Lewis Porter-Phil Scarff Group. World-jazz appearances include India's JazzYatra, and Prayojana International Music Festival; Ghana’s PANAFEST; and Boston Globe Jazz Festival (USA).
Phil is featured on over 35 acclaimed CDs/DVDs, including his recent Hindustani release, 'Ragas on Saxophone,' and releases by Natraj, Aardvark Jazz Orchestra, Jazz Composers Alliance Orchestra and Saxophone Quartet, OddSong, Sandy Prager, National Film Preservation Foundation.
