Kalyan Majumdar is one of the leading upcoming Sitar players of the present time. He has performed in various prestigious concerts all over the country and has received blessings from the audience. He is a regular artiste of All India Radio, Kolkata.
Kalyan, born in a musical family on 13th July, 1996, was a child prodigy. He could sing out notations of any tune and identify Ragas when he was just three years old. He formally started learning Sitar from his father, the distinguished Sitar player Subhajit Majumdar of the Senia Maihar gharana at the tender age of four. Presently he is under the tutelage of the famous Sitar player Pandit Soumitra Lahiri of the Vishnupur gharana.
Kalyan’s music portrays a unique blend of the Senia Maihar gharana and the Vishnupur School of music. He draws inspiration from the playing style of Pt. Nikhil Banerjee and his eminent gurus. Maintaining purity of Ragas, soulful and systematic Alaap and Jor, playing Gats in various Taals, intricate Laykaris, playing of Upaj Tehais and scintillating high-paced Taans, especially the Sapats and Chhuts, are some of the main attractions of his renditions.
Kalyan’s music has been highly praised by several noted musicians including legendary Sarod Maestro Pt. Buddhadev Das Gupta and Tabla Maestro Pt. Subhankar Banerjee who have given him certificates of appreciation.
