Pandit Rajendra Varman, an outstanding and imaginative sitar player of the present generation, belongs to the family of musicians from Rajasthan. His initial training in music started at an early age, from his father, a well-known and eminent vocalist and musicologist of Rajasthan, Late Acharya Devendra Varman 'Naad Ratna'.
He was greatly influenced by the sitar maestro Padmabhushan Ustad Abdul Halim Jaffer Khan of Indore Gharana and under his training at a very tender age imbibed the intricacies of 'Jafferkhani Baaj' of sitar. Today, he is the most acclaimed senior disciple of the Ustad.
Pt. Rajendra Varman is very sensitive as well as creative artiste and has kept himself out of the strict traditional bonds of Gharanas of Indian classical music. He appreciates whatever sounds good, irrespective of the Gharanas. This shows in his rendition of ragaas. Rajendra Varman is well known for his purity and systematic development and the serenity of raga. While his Layakari is lilting, his vilambit and drut compositions display uncanny brilliance and mastery over the instrument. His superfast taans are known for their clarity.
He has performed in all the major conferences and music festivals in India and abroad. He has rendered a number of National programmes on All India Radio, Doordarshan and has also performed at Aakashwani Sangeet Sammelan. Pt. Rajendra Varman has received continuous acclaim from the media and press during the four decades of his performances.
Rajendra Varman is not just a great sitar exponent but also a great Guru. His group of disciples include wide cross section of persons from academicians, doctors, directors, foreigners, govt. officers, etc. Many of his disciples are performing professionally. Pt. Rajendra Varman is teacher, a composer and an accomplished sitar player.
