Smt. Uma Nambudripad Sathya Narayanan, a Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar awardee, is an accomplished and acclaimed dancer. She is a senior disciple of the legendary Bharatanatyam dancer and choreographer Guru Smt. Chitra Visweswaran (Padmashree awardee) under whose tutelage she embarked on her artistic journey. Uma is privileged that she continues to be taught and guided by her guru Chitra Visweswaran at her institution for arts, Chidambaram Academy of Performing Arts.
Uma has also been a disciple of late Kalaimamani Pandit Sri. R Visweswaran in Carnatic vocal at the Chidambaram Academy of Performing Arts. From him, she received advanced training in Carnatic Music, Voice Culture & the specialised form of music accompaniment for dance. After the demise of Sri Visweswaran she now continues her training in Carnatic music under Sri A S Murali.
Uma’s performance of natya is enhanced by her knowledge and understanding of classical music. This in depth knowledge of music also compliments her skills in choreography and nattuvangam, a quality which is rare in today’s youngsters. Her passion and devotion to the art is evident in her recitals, even as she devotes her best to take the art forward with all its fervour.
In addition to dance, she is also trained in other cognate art forms such as nattuvangam, dance music, theory and stagecraft at the Chidambaram Academy of Performing Arts.
