Ustad Amjad Ali Khan is an Indian Hindustani classical vocalist associated with the Kirana Gharana. He is known for his mastery over the traditional elements of Hindustani vocal music, particularly his sensitive alap and vistar, intricate sargams, and dynamic taans. His deep, sonorous voice, combined with a strong command of melody and rhythm, has earned him wide acclaim both in India and internationally.
Early Life and Training
Amjad Ali Khan was born into a distinguished musical lineage. He is the grandson of Padmashree Ustad Shakur Khan and the son and disciple of Ustad Akhtar Nawaz Khan, a veteran vocalist and teacher of the Kirana Gharana. From an early age, he received musical training from his father, and later pursued formal education under the tutelage of his maternal uncles, Ustad Mashkoor Ali Khan and Ustad Mubarak Ali Khan, prominent figures associated with the Sangeet Research Academy in Kolkata. His training embodies the meer-khand technique and the detailed vistar development style characteristic of the Kirana Gharana.
