Reshma
Karmarkar belongs to a long and honoured tradition – the teaching of Hindustani
classical music. Reshmaji
showed her musical promises very early in life and even as a school student,
she was praised by the great marathi writer – Shan. Na. Navare “Her voice is
true to her name”. Truly, her voice is like silk, which is what Reshma means in
Sanskrit. She
took her training under the able guidance of Mrs. Jail. Under Mrs. Jail, she
received two precious gifts – the treasure of music and the inspiration to
carry the torch of classical music forward.
As
a well-known vocalist, she has performed in a number of musical events and
festivals. In the recent years she has dedicated herself to training classical
vocal. She has created a platform for her students through the yearly festival
Swargunjan which she organizes.
For
her students, Reshmatai is much more than just a music teacher. She becomes
their inspiration, friend, philosopher and guide. Many of her students have won
accolades and students like Radhika Nanday and Sumedha Karmahe have made their
mark in popular television music shows.
“A true student of
classical music must give full time dedication and sacrifice towards music.”
she says. As an example, she has given her whole life to music.
