Maria Pomianowska is an extraordinary multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, outstanding composer and educator. Her first love was cello, but Maria plays bowed stringed instruments of almost all musical traditions in the world: sarangi, gadulka, fiddle, suka, kemanche and many more. In search of unique techniques of playing Asian instruments she traveled to India, China, Korea, Mongolia, Japan and Middle East and for many years she studied in India and Japan. She is a graduate of the Chopin Academy of Music in Poland (cello) and works as an associate professor at the Academy of Music in Cracow. Maria is the Artistic Director of Cross Culture Festival in Warsaw - one of the largest world music festivals in Poland and Central and Eastern Europe. While composing she combines classical music, folk and world music. Maria prides herself on being asked to compose some pieces for cello, suka and fiddle by the great Yo-Yo Ma and to perform with him together. Among her achievements is the fact that she has played with such wonderful artists as Jan Gillan, Boris Grebenshchykov, Gonzalo Rubalcaba and et al. She has recorded over 20 albums so far and her latest album Maria Pomianowska & Friends "Chopin on 5 Continents", with amazing arrangements of Chopin's masterpieces written for ethnic instruments from all over the world, achieved the 5th position on the world-wide playlist for world music and folk music - World Music Charts Europe organized by EBU. Maria Pomianowska ceaselessly creates new projects, searches for new ways of expression and thus her being innovative and energy inspire other musicians.
Maria Pomianowska is playing as a soloist as well as chamber musician in various musical projects. She cooperates with numbers of folk, jazz, classical ,pop and World Music groups and artists. She can perform: cello, folk bass, gadulka ( Bulgaria), kamancheh (Iran), sarangi (India), erhu( China), morin-chur (Mongolia) and three Polish forgotten fiddles reconstructed by Maria Pomianowska.
