Mukta Mehta, born and raised in Jammu, developed an early passion for music under the guidance of her father and Guru, Prof. B.S. Bali, a disciple of Pandit Bhimsen Joshi. At the age of four, Mukta began her musical journey, imbibing the values and traditions of the Kirana Gharana, which have since become the cornerstone of her classical singing style.
An accomplished music teacher and performer, Mukta has devoted her life to the world of Indian classical music. She is the founder of the Pt. Bhimsen Joshi Sangeet Academy in Gurgaon, established with her father and Pandit Bhimsen Joshi's sons, Jayant Joshi and Srinivas Joshi. The academy focuses on nurturing cultural values in children and adults while promoting the legacy of the Kirana Gharana. Mukta also runs the Swar Kala Sangam Music Studio, fostering a love for classical music among young learners.
As an educator, Mukta creates a vibrant and experimental learning environment, ensuring her students not only master musical techniques but also develop a deep appreciation for the art form. Her unique teaching approach, which balances discipline with a friendly rapport, makes her both a mentor and a friend to her students.
Mukta’s contributions extend beyond teaching. She has received numerous accolades, including the "Pride of Mohyals" Award 2023 from the General Mohyal Sabha and recognition from the IISC Chief at the 9th India International Science Festival in Delhi in 2024. Her academic achievements include being a Gold Medalist from Jammu University and a scholarship holder throughout her college years.
Her performances span prestigious platforms such as the Northern Command in Udhampur, Shree Aurobindo Ashram Delhi, and the J&K Academy of Art, Culture, and Languages. Mukta remains a dedicated proponent of Indian classical music, ensuring its traditions thrive in the modern world.
