Anusua Roy

Biography

Anusua Roy is a dedicated and accomplished Manipuri classical dancer, known for her lyrical grace and expressive artistry. A devoted disciple of Padmashri Darshana Jhaveri, she has been refining her craft under her guidance since 2013, after beginning her journey in Kolkata under Guru Dr. Gauri Dutta for 17 years. She later trained under Latasana Devi as well. Anusua is a first-class diploma holder in Manipuri dance from Pracheen Kala Kendra and is currently affiliated with Manipuri Nartanalaya, Mumbai. She is also an instructor at Bharata College of Arts and Culture and an empaneled artist for both SPICMACAY and Doordarshan. Her teaching philosophy is rooted in rigorous discipline and refined aesthetics, and she has consistently contributed to social outreach through dance workshops in rural India, including with SPICMACAY and government initiatives. Anusua’s performances are deeply rooted in the Lasya and Tandava tradition of Manipuri, radiating both spiritual depth and technical mastery.

Career

Anusua Roy has captivated audiences across India through her solo and group performances at some of the country’s most prestigious platforms. She has graced events such as the Kala Ghoda Arts Festival (2015–17), Nishagandhi Festival (Kerala Tourism), Ellora Ajanta International Dance Festival, Times of India Bandra Festival, Prayag Festival, Swami Haridas Sammelan, and TedX ICT Mumbai. She has represented Indian classical dance at high-profile events including the India-Africa Summit, International Physics Olympiad, Indian Science Congress, and Discovery of India at Nehru Centre. As a scholarship holder from Manipuri Nrityakendra, Mumbai, she has conducted extensive lecture-demonstrations and workshops, particularly through SPICMACAY’s outreach programs across India. Anusua is also experienced in managing major dance events and festivals, having worked as Assistant Manager (Dance Programming) at NCPA, Mumbai (2013–2015), and curated performances in both Mumbai and Kolkata. Her expertise as a choreographer and instructor continues to enrich the cultural landscape and inspire new dancers.

Awards & Achievements

Anusua Roy has been honored with several prestigious awards for her contribution to Indian classical dance. She received the Girnar Ratna in 2015, Gold Medal in NCPA Whiz Classical (2016), Nritya Bharati Award (2016), and the Kalai Kalanjiyam Award (2019). Additionally, she was awarded a five-year scholarship (2013–2018) by the Manipuri Nrityakendra under Guru Darshana Jhaveri for her consistent excellence and dedication to the Manipuri dance tradition.
