   Biography
Nandini Ghoshal is a dancer with a difference.
Possessing a remarkably original style of representation, she is able to realize - through interpretation - the unique philosophic essence of classical Indian dance. Nandini has undergone extensive training in Kathak before losing herself to the overpowering beauty and subtlety of Odissi. After an initial training in Odissi under Smt.Poushali Mukherjee, she came under tutelage of the maestro Guru Kelucharan Mahapatra – the father of present day Odissi. Nandini has mastered the intricacies of Odissi under the legendary Guru for sixteen years and is one of his most prominent disciples. She has played the central roles in several dance-dramas choreographed by the legendary Guru. Beside being a dancer, choreographer and teacher, she is an accomplished actress having acted in several award winning feature films and on television serials. She is a member of the World Arts Council, an UNESCO sponsored organization of the Valencian Government, Spain. She is an A-graded dancer for Doordarshan (Indian Television) and empanelled with the ICCR (Indian Council for Cultural Relations).

   Career
Performances in India:
Over the last decade Nandini has performed widely in India and abroad. In 1992, Nandini's performance at the First South Asian Festival of SAARC Countries held in Kolkata, was widely appreciated. She has also performed at the Dance Festival of the Dover Lane Music Conference (1994), the Salt Lake Music Conference (1994 and 1995), the Srirampore Sangeet Sammelan (1992 and 1994), Uttarpara Music Conference (2005 and 2007), the Udayshankar Festival and in several important festivals of Kolkata. In other parts of the country, some of her significant performances were at the Nrityotsav '94, Allahabad, organized by the North Central Zone Cultural Center; the Dussehra Festival, Mysore; the Nrutya Parva, Bhubaneswar, organised by the Sangeet Natak Akademi; the Salangai Natham, Thanjavur, organised by South Zone Cultural Centre; the Pradakshina, New Delhi, in celebration of Guru Kelucharan Mahapatra's 75th. birth anniversary; 18th Konark Dance and Music Festival (2003); Bharat Utsav in Manipur organized by the Eastern Zonal Cultural Centre (2004); Dhanbad Kala Mahotsav (2005 & 2006); International Odissi Festival in Bhubaneswar organized by IPAP (2006) ; programs organized by the National Cenetr for Performing Arts, Mumbai and India International Center, New Delhi (2007).
     
Performances Abroad:
Nandini’s first performance outside the country, was in the Festival of India in Germany, 1992, as a significant member of Guru Kelucharan Mahapatra's Odissi troupe. In 1996, Nandini's solo performance at the 16th. North American Bengali Conference, Houston, USA, was greatly appreciated. Some of her other significant solo performances were at the Shahid Divas Celebrations, Bangladesh, 2002; Durga Puja Festival at Chicago, 2003; dance performance organized by Mayo International Relations Association, Rochester, U.S.A., 2003; International Dance Day, Granollers, Spain, 2004 ; a series of performances at the Forum Barcelona 2004, Spain and at the Kali Puja celebrations, Boston, USA, 2007. She has also performed with her own troupe –the Saveri Odissi Dance Troupe at the Bangamela Chicago, U.S.A., 2005 and Ananda Utsav, Toronto, Canada, 2005.
   
Performances in Dance-Dramas:

As a senior disciple of Guru Kelucharan Mahapatra Nandini has played major roles in several dance-dramas choreographed by him. Among others she has played the roles of Sita in Mothhamoni Pradan (Kelucharan Utsav, Bhubaneswar); Radha in Utkal Mayura Moni (Beach Festival, Puri); Sita in Dashanan (Ganga Mahotsav, Varanasi; Krishna Gana Sabha, Madras; Dover Lane Music Conference, Kolkata,); Radha in Kishoror Chandranan Champu (Doordarshan); Subhadrangi in Chandashok (Kelucharan Utsav, Bhubaneswar).
 
Stage Productions:
With her troupe- the Saveri Odissi Dance Troupe, Nandini has produced and choreographed the dance dramas Tapaswini based on the Sanskrit poet Kalidasa’s Kumar Sambhavam and Aranyatanaya based on Kalidasa’s Abhigyana Shakuntalam. She has produced and choreographed Rabindranath Tagore’s Bhanusingher Padabali as an Odissi dance drama.

Teaching Experiance:
Nandini has been teaching regularly and conducting dance workshops in her own school in Kolkata – Saveri Odissi Dance School and also in Ahana (Sri Aurobindo Bhavan). She has also conducted classes, dance workshops and lecture demonstrations in Spain and U.S.A. including in the Theater Institute, Barcelona, Spain, the Triveni School of Dance, Boston, U.S.A. and St. Olaf College, Minnesota, USA. She has taught Odissi dance in a 36 episodes lecture program produced by EMRC in accordance with the UGC syllabus.

Performances on Television:
As an A-grade artiste for Indian Television (Doordarshan), Nandini has given several recitals for Doordarshan National as well as Doordarshan Kolkata. She has choreographed and performed along with her troupe in a number of special programs of Doordarshan including in the celebration of the Birth Centenary of Kazi Nazrul Islam; in the celebration of the Monsoon Season, 2006 and Geetobitan, 2007.
Nandini has performed as a dancer in the documentary film, 'The Origin and Tradition of Odissi' directed by Shri M. M. Patnaik in which Smt. Sanjukta Panigrahi was the choreographer.
She has performed in major roles in several dance dramas made for Doordarshan, directed by Guru Kelucharan Mahapatra, namely Kishoror Chandranan Champu, Kaivarta Prasanga and Sitaharan.

Films:
Nandini is also an accomplished screen actress having played the central role in several feature films including in Tagore's Char Adhyay (in Hindi) directed by Kumar Shahani, Kichhu Sanglap Kichhu Pralap (in Bengali) and Byatikrami (in Bengali) directed by Ashoke Viswanathan, Akeli (in Hindi) directed by Vinode Pandey and Sthhithi (in Malayalam) by R. Sarath. She has also played the central role in many short films, digital films, telefilms and tele-serials.

Tapaswini is based on the Sanskrit poet Kalidasa’s Kumar Sambhavam. The Kumarsambhava is one of Kalidasa's finest works. Spring is described in this poem.
