Prashant Mallick

Hindustani classical vocalist, Dhrupad singer

Prashant Mallick
   Biography
Dhrupad is the oldest vocal and instrumental style, from which the extant Indian classical music originated. The continuity of Dhrupad, a contemplative and meditative form, has been sustained by few traditions like Darbhanga, Dagar, and Betiya traditions.

Prashant Mallick belongs to the illustrious musical family of Darbhanga Gharana and represents the 13th generation of this musical lineage that has produced many musical masters. His training in Dhrupad music started at an early age under the guidance of his guru and father Pt. Prem Kumar Mallick, renowned Dhrupad vocalist. Later, he also had the privilege to learn from his grandfather Pandit Bidur Mallick, Dhrupad maestro.

With the soulful voice and powerful singing style, Prashant Mallick is considered to be one of the torchbearers of the new generation in the field of Dhrupad music. His vocal rendition of Dhrupad contains the richness of Gauharbani and Khandarbani along with variety of subtle variations and improvisations by modulation of volume and sound application, and the use of intricate layakari keeping intact the text of the composition as per their traditional style giving an overall effect of great completeness and charm.
