Makarand Tulankar has achieved a position in the world of Tabla players at a very young age. He was born in a family of musicians, and thus has been exposed to music from a tender age of three.
He took preliminary lessons in the art of Tabla playing from his grandfather Pandit Shankar Vishnu Kanhere, a Jaltarang player. He had a chance to listen to and has been impressed by great players like Ustad Nizamuddin Khan, Pt. Swapan Choudhary, Ustad Zakir Hussain from his childhood. He later got the opportunity to become a disciple of Pt. Anindo Chatterjee and continues taking lessons from the maestro.
While pursuing the art of percussion, Makarnad has regular accompanied renowned artists like Ustad Shahid Parvez, Ustad Usman Khan and Pt. Shankar Abhyankar on Sitar, Sunil Katti, Siraj Khan, Pt. Ulhas Bapat and Dhananjay Daithankar on Santoor, Pt. Valmik Dande, Ustad Faiyaz Hussain on the violin, Pt. Keshav Ginde
Besides, a cd titled 'Journey in dream, was published during his European tour with Ustad Usman Khan. Makarand has also had a chance to experiment with fusion for the wind which encompasses the musical strains of Indian and western classical.
