Raga Shivranjani

   About Raga Shivranjani

Raga Shivaranjani

Shivaranjani is relatively new to the Hindustani tradition, being originally a Carnatic (or South Indian classical) raga. Raga Shivranjani is a very melodious raga and is sung during late evenings. As the name suggests, this raga is used to compose tunes to please the fearsome Lord of destruction, Shiva. This raga is extremely popular among instrumentalists. This raga is known to evoke the moods of romance and sorrow.

This raga is similar to raga Bhoopali but has Gandhar Komal instead of Shuddha Gandhar as in Bhoopali. Madhyam and Nishad Varjya, Gandhar Komal. Rest all Shuddha Swaras. This raga is treated more as semi classical. It is sung from late evening to midnight and is treated more as a semi-classical or light raga. It is sung from late evening to midnight and has a plaintive, hauntingly pretty melodic profile.

Shivaranjani ragam brings out karuna rasa (pathos) and lends itself for elaboration and exploration. It has many compositions in classical music and in film songs.

Shivaranjani or Sivaranjani is a musical scale used in Indian classical music. There are two scales, one in Hindustani music and one in Carnatic music. The Hindustani raga is a pentatonic scale, while the Carnatic scale is an Audava-Audava scale.

In Karnatic Music, this is a janya raga (derived scale) from 22nd mela-kartha raga Kharaharapriya,  associated with the 64th parent scale Vachaspati (melakarta). It is a audava-audava ragam in Carnatic music classification. Shivaranjani's notes when shifted using Graha bhedam, yields 2 other pentatonic ragams, namely, Sunadavinodini and Revati. Graha bhedam is the step taken in keeping the relative note frequencies same, while shifting the shadjam to the next note in the ragam.

As per Hindustani music the komal(soft) gandhar(g) in place of shuddh gandhar (G) is the difference between this raga and the global musical scale of Bhoop. This raga treats memory problems.
