   About Raga Jaijaiwanti

Raga Jaijaiwanti

Jaijaivanti or Jaijaiwanti is a Hindustani classical raga belonging to Khamaj Thaat.  According to the Guru Granth Sahib, this raga is a mixture of two others: Bilaval and Sorath. The raga appears in the latter section in Gurbani, as only four hymns were composed by Guru Tegh Bahadur, the ninth guru. These hymns were added by his son and successor Guru Gobind Singh in 1705 A.D. This raga is not mentioned in any Indian classical scriptures on music nor in the Ragmala.

According to Guru Granth Sahib, Jaijaivanti expresses the feeling of happiness and satisfaction of achievement, while simultaneously conveying the sadness of losing. An apt simile for this Raag is that of a king winning a battle, however, he is then told that his son has perished on the battlefield. This Raag conveys a sense of having to put duty first. The duality of the emotions of joy and sorrow prevents overreacting to good or bad news. Raga Jaijaiwanti bears the closest resemblance to Gara.

This is a very sweet and touching ragr that has a very wide public appeal. However it is a very complex raga. There are several combinations that give flashes of various ragas such as R R G R R G m P m G m G R ; ,P R as in Chhaya raga, G P D n G n n D P D G of Raag Alhaiya , R R m P N N S' N S' R' n D , P D m G ; m G R ,N S of Raag Des and these are intimately merged to give the overall atmosphere of Jaijaivanti.

It should be well remembered that when R G R is with Shuddha Gandhar the Swar yojna must be in Aaroh only, R g R S must be done with Komal Gandhar ie in Avroh, komal Gandhar will be taken between two Rishabhs. Otherwise Shuddha Gandhar will be taken in Avroh if not taken in between two Rishabhs eg : S’ n D P m G R S.

'Jaijaivanti' is sung during the first prahar of the night from 6:00pm to 9:00pm. It is generally recited in the summer or grishma. 'Jaijaivanti' is sung by 2 angs, i.e. the Desh ang and the Bageshri ang.

Dwijavanti is a Carnatic Raga that derives its roots from the Hindustani raga Jaijaiwanti. Muthuswami Dikshitar, one of the Carnatic Trinity, is widely acknowledged as the one who introduced Dwijavanti in Carnatic Music. His two famous compositions: ‘Akhilaandeshwari Rakshamaam’ and ‘Chethashri Baalakrishnam’ are two gems in Dwijavanti.

Raga jaijaivanti have also been pound effective in curing mental disorders and calming the mind.
