Raga Adana

   About Raga Adana

Raga Adana

Adana is an Indian raga. It is also called Adana Kanada. It is often sung or played in drut laya after a vilambit composition in raga Darbari Kanada, as Adana is straighter than Darbari in its chalan, thus allowing faster passages. The flow of this raga is similar to a mix of Madhyamad Saranga with Darbari. Another common vivadi some artists use sparingly is shuddha ni which enhances the Saranga mood of the raga.

Adana was previously called Addana. Adana was a major raga in the 17th century and a combination of the then current ragas Malhar and Kanada. In a ragamala painting from Mewar it is depicted as an ascetic man sitting on a tiger skin, however, Somnath describes him as Kama the god of love. His Adana was quite different from the raga as it is performed today.

Raga Adana resembles raga Darbari Kanada, with the difference that Gandhar is forbidden in Aaroh in Adana. This raga is rendered mostly in Madhya and Tar Saptaks unlike raag Darbari Kanada, which is more deep and hence is rendered in Madhya and Mandra Saptaks (Octaves). In this raga, Komal Gandhar and Komal Dhaivat should not be repeated (oscillated) otherwise raga Darbari Kanada makes its appearance. Like Darbari Kanada, this raga does not employ Meend and Gamak, as this is a flittering dynamic type melodic form.

Although Gandhar is Varjya in Aaroh, but it is rendered in g m R S in Avroh as it is a Kanada Ang raga. In Avrohi Taans, sometimes Dhaivat is skipped like - S' n P m g m R S. The Nishad of Aaroh is on a higher shruti then the regular Komal Nishad.
