Raga Zeelaf or Zilaf
Zeelaf or Zilaf is a raga in Hindustani classical music. It is a pentatonic melody (i.e. containing only 5 swaras) is composed of the following svaras : Sa Ga Ma Pa Dha. It is performed very rarely. Zeelaf also employs the subtle GM - S meend. It is from the Asavari Thaat. But it is played in the Bhairav aang also. Zeelaf has been used by Qawwals and Khayals.
The haunting Raga Zeelaf is a rare raga. Opionion among Indian Classical Music (ICM) experts is divided between those who claim that it was invented by Hazrat Amir Khusrau and others who give him credit solely for popularizing it. There is little debate, however, over Amir Khusrau's pioneering and overarching influence on ICM, especially in the Khayal and Qawwali genres. Several extant ragas owe either their existence or popularity to him, as well as to later sufi saints and to Muslim patron rulers.
