Raga Yaman Kalyan
Yaman Kalyan is a Hindustani classical raga, related to Yaman. The movement of this raga is like Yaman, except that in the descent, it gently touches the flat madhyam using the GmG pattern occasionally.
Ustad Dhyanesh Khan used to say that the flat madhyam in Yaman Kalyan is like the beautiful face of a veiled woman that comes out of the veil occasionally but disappears behind it almost instantaneously. As it is related to Yaman, it is a part of the Kalyan thaat.
Raga Yaman Kalyan has gained popularity, due to its elevated an ethereal beauty. Usually sung in the first half of the night, Raga Yaman Kalyan is one of the first ragas usually taught to a student aspiring to learn Hindustani classical music. This is partly due to the simplicity of the notes in the raga, and partly due to the familiarity of the raga. The raga comprises of all the major swaras, along with both the madhyamas (natural and sharpened 4th). Almost all known artists have sung this raga in one performance or the other.
The difference between raga Yaman and raga Yaman Kalyan is :
In raga Yaman, Madhyam is used only as Tivra M (M#)
In raga Yaman Kalyan, both Madhyams – Shuddh (M) and Tivra (M#) are used.
