Music programs for Wedding - Mehendi & Sangeet

   Intro

Wedding / Marriage / Vivah Samaroh

Weddings in India vary according to the region, the religion, the community and the personal preferences of the bride and groom. They are festive occasions in India, and in most cases celebrated with extensive decorations, colour, dresses, music, dance, costumes and rituals that depend on the community, region and religion of the bride and the groom, as well as their preferences.

First of all a traditional Asian wedding ritual is the Rasm of Haldi or Haldi Ceremony. Haldi (turmeric) possesses many medical properties which are great for skin care. Here the married women of both the bride and the groom's sides of the family take turns applying  a mixture of turmeric, oil, and water on the skin and clothes of the bride and groom.

Ganesh Poojas are especially popular amongst many Hindu families and are held a few days or a day before the wedding to bless the proceedings.  Other poojas include the Kalash Pooja, the Navagraha Pooja, and Mandap Devata Pooja. Gouri Har Pooja in which the bride prays to Gouri and Shankar for a happy and strong marriage. Each invokes different deities that may preside over the marriage.

Baraat, the all-singing all-dancing wedding procession of the groom and his family.

The rituals and process of a Hindu wedding vary depending on region of India, local adaptations, resources of the family and preferences of the bride and the groom. Nevertheless, there are a few key rituals common in Hindu weddings – Kanyadaan, Panigrahana, and Saptapadi; these are respectively.

Indian wedding celebrations include a number of pre-wedding functions such as the Sangeet party and bridal Mehendi functions.

Mehandi and Sangeet:

Sangeet and Mehndi are two Indian wedding functions that are organised one or two days before the wedding day. In sangeet, family members on either side organise and song and dance party, and in the mehndi ceremony, they wear intricate designs made from heena paste on their hands and feet.

Sangeet means music and dance. Music, but when it is used as a term to describe a celebratory event during an Indian wedding it translates to Music Night or Musical party. This musical night is a celebration of the union of not only the couple but the bonding of both families. It is here that both sides bring down their barriers and mingle in a fun environment. It’s usually held a day before the wedding.  Sangeet parties are huge and loud and every bit like a reception but super fun.

The Sangeet is one of more fun and vibrant functions of the big fat Indian wedding. Like most cultures, Hindu customs, too, incorporate music as the soul of a wedding celebration and so the Sangeet function too is abound with enthusiastic dancing and singing against the background of live performances. Often, professional singers who belt out popular film songs along with traditional wedding songs are invited to perform at this all-important Indian pre-wedding function. The Sangeet night is made up of food, drinks and dance galore.

In a sangeet ceremony that goes alongside the mehndi application ceremony, family members and friends dance on famous tracks with DJ, typically taken from Bollywood or Marathi folk.
Some evergreen or contemporary Punjabi songs also played during this ceremony. People, typically, dance on a dance floor or on a pre-decorated stage. The songs typically are played on a music player, but in some cases, family members sing with karaoke tracks as well. And in some circles singers are hired for this as well.

Theme Sangeet:

When it comes to putting together a Mehndi songs playlist, you have a mix of fun dance beats, foot tapping music or a mellow number that talks about a girl’s journey to becoming a bride. Some of these best mehndi songs can also be extremely emotional and meaningful too. And so, your choice of Mehndi songs and wedding dance will ensure that all of your dear ones, who are shaking a leg - the bride's sister, the groom's sister, parents, friends and the extended Parivaar, will have a day to remember.

You can have any theme you like. It could be inspired by cinema, TV serial or wedding you attended or even based on a colour code or a dress code or anything else. One thing that is most important for an entertaining sangeet night is songs and music with Dj. Your playlist should be a mix of evergreen dance and masti songs as well as new and trendy once.

Wedding Costumes

Maharashtrian weddings are known for their pomp, glitter and glamour and in order to match the aura of the weddings, women must dress traditionally. A woman can wear anything from a Saree to a half saree, a lehenga choli, a traditional anarkali or an anarkali gown. The choices are plenty. As per Hindu traditions, the colour 'Yellow' is always believed to be an auspicious one.

Tilak, Sangeet, Haldi, Baraat and the Shaadi, all necessitate the Bride and the bridegroom to wear new attire at each occasion.

Lehenga might be the most popular bridal attire for Indians, but brides in some Indian cultures like the South Indian, the Bengali and Maharashtrian community are expected to wear a saree on their wedding day as well most other wedding-related functions.

Most commonly used for bridal purposes are gorgeous Kanchipuram or Kanjivaram pattu sarees, heavy Banarasi brocade silk sarees, colourful Maharashtrian Paithani sarees, Kerala kasavu sarees and Gujarati Gharchola, Panetar and Patola sarees. These traditional options look great on the wedding day while on the reception you can opt for more contemporary options. Tussar sarees, georgette or chiffon sarees with aari and zardozi work, velvet work sarees etc look great on the night of the reception.

Bridal jewellery sets commonly contain Mangalasutra or chains , Bangles,  Necklaces, Earrings, Rings, Nath and Silver Anklet!

South India and Maharashtra, green bangles signify fertility and prosperity. Another ornament worn traditionally by Indian brides is the bajuband or armlet.

In Indian groom outfit for wedding sherwani is defiantly on the top and be it a hindu or Punjabi Wedding. Dhoti or Payjama or Lungi with Kurta is the goto outfit for Indian grooms.

Rajasthani

Traditional attire for Rajasthani women is ghagra, choli (also called kanchli or kurti) and odhni. The ghagra is a full-length, embroidered and pleated skirt.

Rakhdi/Borla is the traditional Rajasthani head jewellery (Mang tikka). Bell-like in shape, Borla, traditional Rajasthani jewellery design is different from the usual mang tikas.

Bengali

Bengali brides traditionally wear red and white bangles. Shakha (white bangles) are made of conch shells while the Pola (red bangles) are made of red corals.

Maharastrian

The traditional outfit for the Maharashtrian bride is called the Paithani saree. It was originated in Paithan district of Maharashtra. The Paithani saree can either be woven in Kanjeevaram silk or even Benarasi silk. The typical choice of colours for the bride are green and yellow with a gold border.

Nauvari sarees are timeless and authentic outfits for a Maharashtrian bridal look. The name Nauvari saree basically refers to a saree draping style which is very much similar to a Maharashtrian dhoti.

The groom ties the Mangalsutra around the bride's neck during the marriage ceremony. The pendant is made of gold beads and one or two inverted gold bowls called vatis.

South Indian

South Indian women traditionally wear the sari while the men wear a type of sarong, which could be either a white dhoti or a colourful lungi with typical batik patterns.

Weddings in South India mean traditional music, vibrant sarees and heavy jewellery. The South Indian bridal jewellery sets have extensive use of gold and stones like ruby, diamond, etc. from the gold jhumka to the kamarband.

North Indian

The North Indian brides wear a chooda- a set of ivory and red bangles.

In Northern parts, the bridegroom usually wears a Sherwani, Jodhpuri suit or western suit.
