Raga Saazgiri / Saajgiri
Raga Saazgiri is one of the little known Ragas, having a beautiful melodic structure. It is documented in the sixth volume of Hindustani Sangeet Paddhati written by Pt. V N Bhatkhande and the seventh volume of Raga Vidnyan written by Pt. V N Patwardhan.
Raga Saazgiri is considered to be an outcome of blending of two Ragas Pooria and Poorvi. Still it has a melodic personality distinct from the two parent Ragas. The Raga contains S, r, G, M and m, P, d and D and N. G and N are recommended as Vadi and Samvadi notes and the traditionally followed time for presentation is twilight period of evening i.e. 4 to 7 p.m.
it's a fairly old and rare raag; it's supposedly a combination of puriya and purvi, but not quite a straight up mix - it has it's own peculiarities. Raga Saazgiri is that it is made up of four Ragas namely Yaman, Purya, Purvi and Bharav as explained by teacher Ust Shujaat Khan in the recording.
he Raga, though extremely complex to grasp, is presented in a lucid form by Ustads Hamid Ali Khan and Fateh Ali Khan. It is difficult to notate the melodic structure, but some prominent phrases occurring in the presentation are given below from academic point of view:
1)Raga Poorvi: ‘NrGrS, rGmdP, mdNS’’r’’, Nr’’G’’m’’P’’m’’G’’r’’G’’r’’S’’;
2)Raga Pooria: DmGrGr ‘NrS, mDNr’’S’’, r’’NDmGrS;
3)Raga Marwa: ‘NrGmD, DmGr, Gr-rS;
4) Raga Shree: mPNS’’ (sparingly used);
5) Independent phrases: mDNDPM, MDmGr; r’’NDP; r’’NDP->r; mDNPD-mGr.
