Raga Ramkali
Raga Ramkali is an early morning raga in Hindustani classical music which belongs to Bhairav Thaat. In this raga, as in Bhairav, Rishabh and Dhaivat are Komal(flat), but the Teevra and the flat nishad are added. The vadi-samvadi are Pancham and Shadja. The aroha is S r G M P, G M d N S' and the avroha is S' N d P m P, d (N)d P, G M r S. Flat nishad (seventh degree) and sharp madhyama (fourth degree) are used often.
Raga Ramkali also appears in Sikh tradition in North India and is a part of Sikh Scripture Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji. Another form of this Raga present in Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji is 'Raga Ramkali Dakhni.
Ramkali is not given in the Ragmala but is one of the most important ragas of the Guru Granth Sahib. All Gurus, including Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji, have composed verses to this raga. The total number of shabads comes to over three hundred. In the Guru Granth Sahib Ji, a number of hymns in Ramkali expound True Yoga and other spiritual issues. Some celebrated compositions such as Sidha Gosti, Anand, Sadd, Oankar, and the Var by Satta and Balvand are composed to this raga. Some of the verses also contain analogies to music and musical instruments. Four forms of this raga are recognized, although only two are in general use today.
Ramkali is popular with Yogis, and therefore Guru Nanak has composed Sidh-gosht in this raga. The third Guru has also referred to the paraphernalia of Yogis and particularly the harp (kingri) used by them
