Raga Bhairavi

   About Raga Bhairavi

Raga Bhairavi

Queen of melodies is Raga Bhairavi. The soft (Komal) notes and their smooth rendering with pleasing touches. The Khatke, Jhatke and Murkiyan simply mesmerizes the audience. A pleasant sobering atmosphere full of love and piety is created and one feels so close to the Supreme.

Compositions in raga Bhairavi include Thumris, Tappas, Bhajans, Ghazals, Light Songs etc. Since it is an ocean of immense possibilities, the melodic combinations can include all the twelve notes rendered with skill.

Raga Bhairavi has a very gentle, feminine quality to it as all its variable notes are flat. The traditional time allotted to this raga is early morning, but it is often also performed at the end of an evening of classical music as a way of winding down. This raga belongs to the Bhairavi thaat.

Bhairavi is a Hindustani Classical heptatonic (Sampurna) raga of Bhairavi thaat. In Western musical terms, raga Bhairavi employs the notes of the Phrygian mode, one of the traditional European church modes.

Rishabh and Pancham are occasionally skipped in Aaroh like: S G m d P or G m d N S'. But in Avroh, Rishabh and Pancham are Deergh like S' N d P or P m G m r r S. In Avroh, Gandhar is skipped like: G m r S. Madhyam is an important note.

Raga Bhairavi is typically performed with a peaceful, serious and occasionally sad mood. Bade Gulam Ali Khan has asserted that Bhairavi is originated in the folk tunes of Iran.

The 'jati' of Raga Bhairavi is Sampoorna-Sampoorna. This means that it comprises of all the notes Sa, Re, Ga, Ma, Pa, Dha and Ni. Swaras Re, Ga, Dha and Ni are komal swaras, with the others remaining Shuddha. Raga Bhairavi provides relief from Sinus, cold, phlegm, toothache.
