Raga Mangal Bhairav
Raga Mangal Bhairav is a part of Bhairav Family. Raga Gunakree (Gunakali - Bhairav Thata) employs S,r,M,P and d and is a very melodious raga. Raga Mangal Bhairav in its base form is pentatonic; however, Komal Dhaivat d is replaced by Shuddha Dhaivat D. The raga therefore, can be considered as a Jodraga of Bhairav and Durga. Although Komal Dhaivat is replaced by Shuddha Dhaivat, the prominent presence of Komal Rishabh shows its close relation with Bhairav Anga. A mention of the raga Mangal Bhairav is not found in Pandit Bhatkhande’s books; hence the raga appears to be of recent origin.
Two other variants of the Raga are also found - one employing Shuddha Nishad N in Aroha and Shudha Gandhar G in Avaroha (Type II); and the other using Shuddha Gandhar G in Aroha and Avaroha (Type III). Audios of all the three types are included in the web site. Prof. B Subbarao documents another variant belonging to Melakarta No. 5 Manavati employing S,r,R,M,P,D and N as raga Manoranjini.
