Among morning Ragas, Gunkali is essentially an epitome of Bhakti and Karuna. This Raag belongs to Bhairav Thaat. This is a Meend Pradhan Raag. Using Komal Rishabh and Komal Dhaivat in Raag Durga makes way for Raag Gunkali.

Raga Malkaus has five wives, and Ragini Gunakali is one of them. Gunakali Ragini is a morning melody associated with the winter and Malkauns raga, intended to evoke a meditative, tranquil mood. It is a serious raga.

Gunkali is a straightforward raga and can be freely expanded in all the three octaves. Especially alaps sound very nice in this raga. This raga is similar to Jogiya. This raga is also called Gunakri or Bhairav Gunakali. There is one more Gunakli from Bilawal thaat which is not commonly heard.
