   About Raga Gujri Todi

Raga Gujri Todi or Gurjari Todi or Gujari Todi

Gurjari is an Indian classical music raga. Raga Gurjari is named after Gujarat, India. In south India, the raga is called Shekharachandrika.

The present day Gurjari raga owes its origin to the Gurjars (or Gujjars).

Gurjari Todi is a very common morning raga in Todi That.  There are a number of popular film songs in Gujari Todi, including Ik Tha Bachapan.

Eliminating Pancham in raga Todi results in the melodic atmosphere of raga Gurjari Todi. This raga is also known as Gujari Todi. It is very effective in producing Karunya or Karuna Ras.

Gujari is an Indian musical raga (composition) that appears in the Sikh tradition from northern India and is part of the Sikh holy scripture called Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji or SGGS for short.

If there is a perfect simile for raga Gujari, it would be that of a person isolated in the desert, who has their hands cupped, holding water. However, it is only when the water begins to slowly seep through their joined hands that the person comes to realize the real value and importance of the water. Similarly Raag Gujari leads the listener to realize and become aware of passing time and in this way comes to value the precious nature of time itself. The revelation brings the listener to an awareness and admission of their own death and mortality, making them utilize their remaining ‘life time’ more wisely.

As compared to raga Todi, Komal Rishabh is strong in Gurjari Todi and is rendered Deergh. This can be expanded in all the three octaves.

There are fundamental differences between Mian Ki Todi and Gujari Todi.  Where Mian-ki-Todi has a Pa that is very weak, Gujari Todi has no Pa at all, therefore they sound very similar.  The absence of Pa makes this rag shadav - shadav jati.  As is typical of the vadi / samvadi theory there are differences of opinion concerning the vadi and samvadi; Dha, Ga, and Re have variously been declared to occupy these positions.
