Raga Dhani

   About Raga Dhani

Raga Dhani

Dhani is a pentatonic raga in Hindustani classical music. It is a sprightly raga often described as Bhimpalasi sans the notes, Dha and Re. It however has its own distinct character. Dhani is frequently heard in popular music.

Raga Dhani is a light and playful Raga, hence Vilambit Khyals are not very prevalent, instead Drut or Madhya Lay Shringar or Bhakti Ras compositions are apt. This Raga is considered a Kshudra Raga. Raga Dhani is considered as a 'sweet and romantic version of Raga Malkauns.' Raga Malkauns is very devotional in nature, while Raga Dhani is very romantic in nature.

Komal Gandhar is a very powerful and Nyas swar and the Raga is expanded around this note. Komal Nishad is also a Nyas swar. Not long ago, Rishabh was not considered Varjya in Avroh and hence the Jati of this Raga was considered Audhav-Shadhav. But in present times, Raga Dhani is rendered with Rishabh Varjya in Avroh and the Jati of this Raga is Audhav-Audhav. However, sometimes some vocalists rarely use Rishabh in Avroh to beautify the Raga.
