Raga Deepak

   About Raga Deepak

Deepak Raga is one of the various musical styles prevalent in Indian culture.

When Tansen reached his height, he was included in the Navaratnas of Akbar. Emperor Akbar became such a fan of Tansen's music that he started obeying everything. Seeing such an effect of Tansen on the emperor, other court singers started to jealous. One day these people made a plan for the destruction of Tansen. All of them requested Emperor Akbar to ask Tansen sing 'Deepak' raga. Akbar was told that no one could sing this raga properly except Tansen. The emperor agreed, and ordered Tansen to sing the Deepak raga. Tansen refused to sing this raga stating the inauspicious result, yet Akbar's insistence did not avert, and Tansen had to sing the Deepak raga.  Tansen also got burnt by the raga.  As the raga started, the heat increased and gradually the atmosphere became very hot. The listeners hid here and there to save their lives, but Tansen's body was ablaze with the flames of fire. In such a condition Tansen ran to his house, where his daughters saved his life by singing Megh Malhar. Several months after this incident, Tansen's body recovered. But it settled inside the body and eventually  it took his life in February, 1586.

Raga Deepak is one of the six primal ragas of Indian Classical Music. It is believed to be created by Lord Shiva and there is a myth that singing it creates fire. There are 5 types of Raga Deepak. One belongs to Poorvi Thaat, second to Bilawal Thaat, third to Kalyan Thaat, fourth to Kafi Thaat and fifth to Khaamaj Thaat. Apart from that, there is another raga in Kalyan Thaat whose name is Raga Deepak Kedar. So taking it in the list, there are 6 types of Raga Deepak. Although this raga is nearly extinct.
