Raga Chhayanat

Chhayanat (shadow or glimpse of Nat) is a raga in Hindustani classical music. It is a relative of Nat, an old raga that is rarely performed. Chhayanat is a very popular raga whereas its constituent 'Chhaya' and 'Nat' are rarely sung anymore. Its distinctive phrases P->R and P->S' set it apart from the related Kamod, Kedar, Alhaiya Bilawal and Hameer.

This is a very sweet raga that creates its mood and over powers environment with its impact. This is a mixture of Chhaya and Nut ragas. RGRS ; DNDP; RGRS is very attractive, sweet and emotionally swaying. The Shuddha Madhyam is freely used in Aaroh and Avroh but Teevra Madhyam is used only in Aaroh like: DMP ; PDMP or MPDP . In Aaroh, sometimes Shuddha Nishad is skipped to reach Tar Saptak Shadj ( Sa' ) like: RG m P ; PDPP S' . Descending from Tar Saptak Shadj ( Sa' ) to Pancham via Meend at once creates the raga Mood.

Sometimes Komal Nishad is used as a Vivadi Note, like: RG mn DP . In this raga the Pancham-Rishabh Sangati ( PR or ,PR ) is important and raga Vachak. Using Meend and Kan while rendering heightens the melodic impact of the raga. Aalaps and Taans are often started with Rishabh.

This raga is expanded mostly in Mandra and Madhya Saptaks. The nearby ragas are Kedar , Kamod and Hameer . This raga creates a heavy atmosphere.
