Raga Basant Mukhari

   About Raga Basant Mukhari

Raga Basant Mukhari

Raga Basant Mukhari is a very sweet but difficult raga among the ragas of the day. This raga is a combination of raga Bhairav (Sa Re1 Ga Ma)  in Purvanga and raga Bhairavi  (Pa Dh1 Ni1 Sa') in Uttarang. That's why a lot of Riyaz is needed to sing it.

Raga Basant Mukhari is a sweet melodious form among morning ragas. It is however difficult to render smoothly. The combination of raga Bhairav as (S r G m) in Poorvang and raga Bhairavi as (P d n S') in Uttarang demands both concentration as well as full preparation through intensive training or Riyaz.

The chalan of this raga is like Bhairav but Rishabh and Dhaivat are not oscillating. This raga can be expanded in all the three octaves. This raga creates a soothing atmosphere. Inspite of the name, raga Basant Mukhari has no relation to raga Basant and is classified in Bhairav Thaat.

The raga Basant Mukhari is widely acknowledged as the Hindustani adaptation of the Carnatic raga Vakulabharanam. The tonal structure of Basant Mukhari comes into being by replacing the suddha (natural) ni swara of raga Bhairav with a komal (flat) ni. Another way of looking at the same scale is that it replaces the komal (flat) ga swara of raga Bhairavi with a suddha (natural) ga.

Because of the poorvanga dominance of Bhairav, and the madhyanga dominance of Bhairavi, the Bhairav character tends to dominate Basant Mukhari, thus qualifying it as a variant of Bhairav. A common departure from the Bhairav-dominant character of this raga is a tilt towards raga Jogia, also a member of the Bhairav family. Some musicians try to emphasise the Bhairavi facet of Basant Mukhari by focusing more of their melodic development in the uttaranga.
