Dr. Rita Dev born in Assam, India, is hailing from a family where the love for music & arts has been a way of life. She was introduced to music by Guru Sri. Nirmal Acharjee at an early age.
After graduation, she joined Banaras Hindu University and spent several years in pursuit of her quest for music. She completed Master of Music from there and got the opportunity to learn Music under Guru Prof. Dr. Chittaranjan Jyotishi who himself is the mainline student of Padmashree Pt. Balawant Rai Bhatt of Guwalior Gharana. Under the meticulous guidanace of Professor Dr. Jyotishi, She was awarded in 1991, the Degree Doctor of Music by Banaras Hindu University and also the Prestigious Pt. Omkarnath Thakur Award.
The constant desire of her for evolving the unique and to enrich the aesthetically appealing to distinctive style, she is now under the guidance and tutelage (1989 to till date) of the Prima Dona of Thumri, Padmabhushan Dr. Smt. Girija Devi for advanced training in Khyal, Thumri, Tappa, Dadra, Kajri, Hori, Chaiti and Bhajan. Rita has given vocal support to her Guruma Smt. Girija Devi in many musical festivals. She also had the fortune to learn (1986 to 1988) light classical music of Benaras Gharana from late Pandit Mahadev Prasad Mishra.
As a solo vocalist Rita has performed in all major Cities of India including Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Varanasi, Bhuveneshwar, Cuttack, Guwahati, Agra and received wide appreciation for her soulful performances. Recently she performed at BABA ALLAUDIN KHAN SAMAROH AND KAJRI JHOOLA MAHOTSAV.SHE had also performed at Jkk jaipur. Her passion, sincerity, sensitivity, distinct style, constant innovation, creative endeavour and typical ingenuity in design and presentation towards music clearly reflects her thinking and singing that acclaims accolade. Her imaginative presentation with subtleties of melody and effortless control over intricate yet appealing phrases in alap, taan and sargam with stirring portrayal make her music a true satisfying experience.
Apart from stage performances she is a regular performer of All India Radio and Doordarshan. She has marked her distinct presence with Khyal, Thumri, bhajan in few popular TV serial produced on classical music and bhajan - Mausiqi ek khoj, Swarajali, Aradhana -telecasted regularlyin Delhi Doordarshan. A winnerof several awards, Rita has always been applauded by distinguished audiences for her melodious recitals depicting Gwalior & Banaras Gharanas.
Rita has worked as teaching associates with the faculty of performing Arts, Banaras Hindu University for two years and at present she is associated with Agra College, Agra as Associate Professor Vocal-Department of music.
